Don't be afraid, the following text is suitable for people under the age of 18, because I want to write about a text processing programm called LaTeX!
I had my first experiences at the university where we need LaTeX for a project and I really enjoyed the mathematic features. This semester I write my diploma thesis and I (luckily) decided soon to write my project with LaTeX.
It needed a few hours to become familiar with the functions of LaTeX once again and to learn how to manage such a huge project (with over 100 pages) but once again I'm relly satisfied how professional this program works - table of contents, headings, table of figures, footers - everything is done simple and how the writer wants it (different to a Micro$oft "program") ...
For Beginners there are many tutorials on the web and if you are used to HTML - the system is really similar to it.
I hope some day I will have the time to write a tutorial about how your diploma thesis should be done in LaTeX - so blog on!
