Because of the influence of this "Toast" she has won over 70.000 $ in a casino and to proof this wonder the bread has not go mouldy until now.

Since the middle of the week when I recognized that I'm rankend under the thousand best Warcraft 3 - Reign of Chaos players at the Northrend Portal (Europe) I want to play as often as possible to become better and better in this statistic.
But today I lost 2 out of 3 games and I'm dissapointed ... :-(
- tomorrow will be a new day and my Nightelf forces will rise again.

I like to play with the small, fast elves and their powerful spells assisted by the mighty Demon Hunter Illidan, who is the key to my wins all the time. I need his power, quickness and his skills - like the powerful Mana Burn and the ultimate Metamorphosis, when Illidan becomes a powerful demon. So the main aim in my tactics is to boost my Demon Hunter to Level 6 as fast as I can.

I have read many articles about how Google is spying on its users and that Google is working together with the U.S. Government.
One example how Google is ignorating your personal rights is that the site sets a cookie which expires in the year 2038 (why so late?) and stores your search habits.

Yesterday I decided to install a new feed aggregator for the PCCP-Weblogs (actually Danis and mine ...) and I choose Gregarius:
This aggregator is easy to install, you only need PHP, MySQL and this exact Installation Manual. It works easy and fast, the result is good and the best thing is that the progress of this program is going on.
Here you can see the result of the PCCP-Feed supported by the Crystal Theme.

My next work was to install Greymatter 1.3 on our private webspace (for Elisabeth and me). There is also a really helpful manual which creates the installation really simple. Now in my leisure time (if there will be one beside my master thesis) I will design a template which suits our needs and I hope you can read a few stories there soon ... ;-)

Are you in real peeve of Viagra, Medical stocks or Pishing Mails in your mailbox though using your email-address in internet only in this form: tobi(at)pccp(dot)at.

If nothing works: like using my Gmx-Address and the implemented SPAM-filter is ignoring mails that are beginning with ***SPAM***!
Or using the Edis Spam-Filter (which sorts out nearly nothing: in words ZERO mails).

After research in the WWW and many different suggestions I choose SpamPal to be my favourite: it's open-source, compatibel to many mail-programs and there exists a good doku how to install and configure it to your needs.

It works great!!
All SPAM-Mails get caught and are stored in my Spam directory where I delete all of them. The receivers of emails send by me are automatically added to my whitelist and the blacklist is easily set.

My short-term test rating is: Works easy and satisfying!

Since a short time flash content does not work in my Firefox browser any more. Installing the actual flash plugin from here, doesn't handle the problem either.

Finally the Firefox FAQ helped - you have to disable OBJ-TABS in the Adblock plugin:
1. Open the Adblock preferences (Tools -> Adblock -> Preferences in Firefox)
2. Click on "Adblock Options", and untick "Obj-Tabs"

Then you know what I'm talking about - let's call it the World of Warcraft (WoW) virus. A computer game is destroying friendships or partnerships and why? Caused by a virtual world ... but the real world is much better and greater! Come on all harmed people, let's do something against it and help our infected fellow men (and women).

They are addicted, so the first step has to be very careful: It would be to restrict online time for 2 hours a piece and 4 hours maximum a day. The next step is to limitate the highest level in the game to Level 40 - and only one character per account should be allowed. Last but not least friends or partners should be enabled to allow only specific times of a day for the addicted to play.

Maybe there is hope left to rescue them ...

The best solution for spam infected mail addresses is to use Mozilla Thunderbird as your mail client. The spam filter works really great and as a result of this I am not inconvenienced from spam any longer and have not to use a special program to achieve this goal - it is part of my mail program.

Since I read this article on ORF Futurezone, about the Firefox Browser winning market shares and the IE loosing them, I wonder what could be the reason?
First I thought about the Firefox being the better browser, with more security, features that are part of Firefox for years which the IE is claiming to be its newest invention for version 7, open-source, many useful plugins, and so on, believe me the list is nearly endless (everybody who uses the browser knows many of the benefits).
But this cannot be the main reason for the success of firefox and so I found this:

After search in the World-Wide-Web, to fix a virus problem on a PC, I decided to try "True Sword", caused by the reason that many websites praised it. First I was shocked how many malicious component the program found on my PC (which I thought must be clean), but after a closer look I was disappointed of the program:

When I look through the report none of the entries can be a spyware program or even worse a virus or trojaner. True Sword detects files like java.exe, javaw.exe, firefox.exe, thunderbird.exe, notepad.exe (lol) and all anti-virus oder anti-spyware tools, even zone alarm.

True Sword should be a joke, I think, so don't use it to scan your PC - or all this "bad" files listed before would be detected an eliminated (I just don't let it).

Two open-source tools can help on this way - both with simple usage and abolutely for free!

First SpamGourment - a really nice idea and practical for web-sides where you need an e-mail address to validate your registration (e.g.: a forum). By the help of SpamGourment you can create a temporary address to receive a specified number of mails, which are sent to your real e-mail address. All other mails are discarded and so no SPAM will receive you over this registration.

The second one to is to encrypt your e-mails to increase the costs reading them unwanted. GNUPG is the tool of my choice. You only have to create a public key and to exchange it with your communication partners to protect your privacy.

Firefox is the best web-browser (or better - it is the only one practicable to use) and I love it when the best browser just becomes better by a nice add-on.

Sitting in front of the PC without listening to music is very hard for me. So Winamp is running all the time in the background. And now I have the possibility to control my music addiction ;) out of my web-browser with the add-on FoxyTunes

FoxyTunes at the bottom of Firefox.

With FoxyTunes you can specify the media player you want to control and also get some nice extra features like lyrics, videos and pictures to the mp3 you are already listening to.

HTML mails stink ... :/

And so, as a feature, Thunderbird blocks them by default and shows just text only mails (which should be state of the art). So if you are sure that HTML mails (or even rss) from an address are save or just want temporary to read for example a newsletter you can use the helpful Add-On for Thunderbird called 'Allow HTML temp', where you activate the HTML function with just one simple for exact one time.

RSS-Feeds are very comfortable.

But what I really want is to show others what's new in many different blogs collected on a website. In my special case I want to grab all RSS feeds from the weblogs of many PCCP members. Long time we used Gregarius, but this system seems to miss further development and as a result does not support actual needs.

So I searched intensively for a new solution and I believe to have found it yet. I use WP-o-Matic, a plugin for our Wordpress weblog. This plugin seems to work very comfortable and the installation was really easy.

To fit perfect, another plugin was needed - the Advanced Category Excluder plugin, where you can define Categories not to be shown at the root page.

The result is a category which collects all PCCP Weblogs Feeds and shows them inside the PCCP Weblog, but does not spam the front page. Believe it or not, here is the result ...

People under 18 years are allowed to read further ... ;)

It's great how the www offers many practical tools for the daily routine of a nerd! Did you face the problem that you want send an url in an e-mail or just post it in a comment (you can try it here ;) ) and the url is sooooooo long that the line break gets it and as a result, when somebody clicks on it it the link won't work.

There is a solution to the problem - it is called Tiny Url: It is free, it is easy, you just have to use it ...

Wer eine der praktischen Funktionalitäten von Chrome haben will ohne damit sein komplettes Surfverhalten Google offen zu legen, dafür gibt es ein Firefox Addon genannt Fast-Dial.
Einfach Lieblingsseiten definieren in dem man, dort befindlich, die rechte Maustaste klickt und "Zu Fast Dial hinzufügen" auswählt. Die Seite mit den "Lieblingsseiten" bekommt man angezeigt sobald man einen neuen, leeren Tab öffnet.

Der neue IE soll ja eine coole Funktion haben, wo zusammengehörige (= zu der gleichen Domäne) Tabs in der gleichen Farbe eingefärbt werden ... bietet der Firefox schon lange, mit den Addon Chroma Tabs Plus. Microsoft bleibt seinem Motto "Besser gut gestohlen als selber schlechte Ideen haben" also treu.

Um die Sicherheit zu erhöhen kann man mit Close'n Forget die aktuelle Webseite schließen und sofort alle Cookies löschen lassen (optional sogar die Webseite aus der History löschen). Man muss nur das Addon installieren und dann die Navigations-Symbolleiste anpassen, indem man das "Close N'Forget" Icon hinzufügt - mit einem Klick werden dann die betroffenen Cookies gelöscht.

Als praktische Ergänzung empfinde ich auch Google Preview, wo man auf der Ergebnisseite von Google gleich eine kleine Vorschau der angezeigten Webseiten bekommt.

Würde mich natürlich über Ergänzungen zu dieser Liste in Form von Kommentaren freuen.

Today they have their 10th anniversary and so the provide their oldest search index to the users (be careful, this is just an example that they store everything). This search index is from the year 2001 - Paris Hilton just leads to hotels, my name is not known by Google and wtf is youtube.

ich möchte nicht, dass sie mein komplettes Surfverhalten beobachten können. Also fällt der Chrome Browser zum Surfen leider aus, obwohl er wirklich viele nette Features bietet und die Javascript-Engine teuflisch schnell ist.

Gut, dass es dafür Alternativen gibt - wie den Iron Browser, der auf den OpenSource Code Chromium des Google Chrome basiert. Damit kann man den Google Browser (bzw. einen nahen Verwandten) ohne schlechtem Gewissen verwenden.

Achja, warum finde ich Google öfter einfach zum Grinsen - hier die Meldung die kam als ich Chrome auf meinem Firmenrechner (zum Testen) durch Iron ersetzte:

Mit dem Wort Spam kann heutzutage jeder etwas anfangen - zu präsent ist es leider im Alltag, sowohl privat als auch in der Arbeit.
Doch vorher kommt dieses Wort, das heutzutage bei E-Mails soviel wie Abfall bedeutet, eigentlich? Monty Python Fans müssen jetzt vermutlich nicht mehr weiterlesen, doch es soll ja auch andere Menschen geben ...

Der Begriff stammt aus einem Sketch der britischen Komikertruppe und bedeutet im Ursprung "spiced ham", also gewürztes Dosenfleisch. In ihrem Sketch kommt das Wort am Anfang in jedem Satz vor, gegen Ende ist es das bestimmende und dominante Wort - kling konfus, ist es auch ... Es gibt eine sehr praktische Möglichkeit im Firefox die ich intensiv benutze und deswegen kurz beschreiben möchte.
Man kann sogenannte Schlüsselwörter definieren, mit deren Eingabe in der Adresszeile Lesezeichen aufgerufen werden (zB: http://www.pccp.at/forum mit Schlüsselwort forum).
Richtig nützlich wird diese Funktionalität dadurch, dass man an den Aufruf der Schlüsselwörter noch Parameter übergeben kann. Ich nutze diese Funktionalität primär für direkte Suchanfragen an Google, Wikipedia, Amazon - hier ein paar Beispiele:

Unter Adresse den direkten Suchaufruf eintragen mit %s für den zu ersetzenden Parameter und dann kann man bei diesem Beispiel bei Eingabe von w Perwang sofort nach Perwang in der Wikipedia suchen ohne den "Umweg" über die Seite mit Klick in die Suchmaske zu nehmen.

Ich weiß es noch wie damals wie Google wie der Phönix aus der Asche aufgetaucht ist: Google war einfach zu bedienen, Google war schlank, Google war ohne Werbung und Google lieferte hervorragende Ergebnisse und das noch dazu schnell. Damals war Google nicht mehr als eine Suchmaschine, die scheinbar alles richtig machte und optimal auf die Bedürfnisse der User zugeschnitten war.

Heutzutage ist Google aus dem Internet-Alltag, nein aus dem Leben, nicht mehr weg zu denken - man spricht nicht umsonst von "Googlen" wenn man etwas im Internet sucht. Der Einstieg passiert bei mir sofort komfortabel direkt über den Browser, da brauche ich gar nicht mehr Google direkt anzusurfen.
Die vielen praktischen Google-Tools sind aus meinem Alltag gar nicht mehr wegzudenken: Google Kalender, Google Mail, Google Maps, Google Reader, Picasa, Google Docs, Google Analytics, ... - Google weiß wie man komfortable, praktische und anwenderfreundliche Webapps baut.
Doch mittlerweile ist Google ein Riesenkonzern und vernetzt alles und jeden. Das Wissen von Google über uns alle ist (scheint) unendlich und diese Informationen liegen alle gut gespeichert auf den Google Servern und warten nur darauf vernetzt zu werden oder sind wahrscheinlich schon eindeutig dem jeweiligen User zugeordnet, um ein immer eindeutigeres Gesamtbild zu zeichnen.
Natürlich nur zum Nutzen des Users, wie Google nicht müde wird zu betonen (wers glaubt ...)

Ich bin gerade dabei mich intensiver mit diesem Thema auseinanderzusetzen: aufgemuntert durch einen Artikel im Spiegel, sowie einem Buch über Google, das ich gerade lese und vor allem dem komischen Gefühl im Hinterkopf, dass sich in den letzten Jahren in meinem leicht paranoiden Nerd-Gedächtnis abgespeichert hat.

Jetzt bin ich auf der Suche nach einem realistischen Ausstiegsszenario - doch das könnte noch dauern ... Eine alternative Suchmaschine mit Proxy für anonymen Zugriff habe ich bereits gefunden, die werde ich jetzt im Firefox hinzufügen und standhaft verwenden: Ixquick - die datenschutzfreundlichste Suchmaschine der Welt

Doch wie komme ich von Google Mail (fasst alle meine Mails von den verschiedensten Konten zusammen und dadurch vor allem anderen bestens für die Arbeit, wo ich mir keinen Thunderbird installieren kann, geeignet) und Google Kalender weg. Meine Daten in die Hände eines anderen Internet-Giganten geben (wie zB: Yahoo) ist irgendwie auch den Teufel mit dem Belzebub austreiben.

Diese Alternativen für den Kalender werden ich mir mal ansehen: Remember the milk und noch besser schaut Scrybe aus (leider noch im geschlossenen Beta-Status) - dafür, wie ich mit der automatischen Synchronisierung mit Thunderbird Lightning umgehe muss ich erst eine Lösung finden.
Beim Mail gibt es meines Wissens nach leider nichts Vergleichbares um den gleichen Preis (nämlich gratis).

Das habe ich schon befürchtet: Dass mein Ausstieg aus der Google-Welt nicht so einfach wird - doch Schrittweise möchte ich es angehen und anfangen werde ich, wie schon erwähnt, beim Kerngeschäft von Google: Der Suche!

Fast fünf Monate nach meinem Eintrag muss ich leider das Resümee ziehen: Ich habe es nicht geschafft, mein (Arbeits-) Alltag funktioniert ohne die Unterstützung von Google nicht mehr.
Ich habe tapfer versucht auf andere Suchmaschinen umzusteigen und da ich nicht von einem Großkonzern der Daten sammelt und auswertet zum nächsten wechseln wollte verwendete ich lange Ixquick. Ich musste feststellen, dass ich die weit besseren und hilfreicheren Ergebnisse mit dem Branchenführer Google erreichte und deswegen immer wieder darauf zurückgriff.
Also beschloss ich mich einfach bei meinem Google Account nicht einzuloggen damit meine Suchanfragen wenigstens nicht so einfach mir zuordenbar sind - nicht praktikabel weil ich für meine Mails nebenbei immer Gmail offen habe. Außerdem ist da ja noch der Google Kalender der online meine Termine (Arbeit, Privat, Club) managen muss - für den muss man natürlich auch eingeloggt sein.

Einen Schritt weiter bin ich allerdings und ich habe meine Taktik geändert. Ich überhäufe Google mit sinnlosen Informationen und möchte ihnen damit erschweren (oder bestenfalls unmöglich machen) meine "echten" Suchanfragen rauszufiltern. Für diesen Zweck gibt es ein super Firefox Addon: TrackMeNot (mehr Infos auf der Webseite)

Dieses Addon überschwemmt Google (und natürlich auch andere Anbieter wenn man das will) mit Suchanfragen (bei mir sind es aktuell 30 pro Stunde, kann man aber wunderbar konfigurieren). Als Quelle können beliebige RSS-Feeds herangezogen werden, aus diesen werden dann die Suchanfragen geparsed, funktioniert tadellos und genial einfach.

Ich gebe nicht auf, vielleicht finde ich auch noch Lösungen für meine zwei größten "Problemfelder" - Mail und Kalender ... *stay tuned*

Songbird, der quelloffene Player zur Medienwiedergabe basierend auf Mozillas XUL ist seit geraumer Zeit das Instrument meiner Wahl zur Wiedergabe meiner mp3s.

Wie bei allen XUL Anwendungen ist ein entscheidender Vorteil das große Angebot an nützlichen Erweiterungen aus der Community. Ohne die Erweiterung "Now playing List" ist der Songbird für mich nicht mehr praktikabel.
Nachdem diese Erweiterung aber sehr spärlich aktualisiert wird und dadurch regelmäßig mit neuen Songbird Versionen nicht mehr funktioniert hier ein kleiner Trick um sie auch weiterhin verwenden zu können:

1) Firefox öffnen
2) Download Addon: http://addons.songbirdnest.com/xpis/4508?source=download
3) Umbennen: nowplaying-1.2.3.zip und entpacken
4) Edit install.rdf
a) Eintrag in Zeile 90 anpassen: <em:maxversion>1.7.*</em:maxversion>
5) Dateien wieder zippen und umbenennen: nowplaying-1.2.3.xpi
6) Songbird starten
7) File -> Open File... -> nowplaying-1.2.3.xpi
8) Songbird neustarten

Hier noch die schon angepasste Erweiterung zum Download: nowplaying-1.2.3.xpi (muss mit "Ziel speichern unter" heruntergeladen werden)

Auf meiner Flucht aus den Händen von Google habe ich eine Lösung gefunden die wiedermal das Eingeständnis beinhaltet, dass Google im Moment einfach die beste Suchmaschine ist. Deswegen muss man andere Wege finden Google etwas vom stetigen Datenfluss (noch dazu eindeutigen Usern zurechenbar) vorzuenthalten, um das Erringen der "Weltherrschaft" noch etwas aufzuschieben ;)

Das Tool meiner Wahl ist im im Moment Google Sharing - ein Firefox-Addon.

Google Sharing macht es für Google unmöglich, die Abfragen bestimmten Benutzern zuzuordnen, indem die Suchanfragen verschiedener Benutzer so lange zusammengemischt werden, bis sich das Verhalten nicht mehr nachvollziehen lässt. Die Daten werden über einen durch das Firefox-Addon angesprochenen Proxy gesendet, man bekommt bei jeder Anfrage eine andere Identität, die dann mit anderen Usern ausgetauscht wird. Jeder andere (nicht Google) Traffic wird vom Plugin nicht angerührt.

Die Installation erfolgt kinderleicht über die Firefox Addons Seite, sonst muss man keine Konfiguration durchführen.

Seit Mitte des Jahres gibt es das groß angekündigte iPad nun. Nachdem wir in der Firma für Testzwecke eines zur Verfügung gestellt bekommen, habe ich es in mehreren Alltagssituation über einen längeren Zeitraum ausprobiert.

Prinzipiell muss man sagen, Apple ist hier wieder eine echte Intuition gelungen. Man kann ihnen sehr skeptisch gegenüberstehen (so wie ich das tue), aber im Bereich Usability und natürlich auch Coolness-Faktor sind sie Gradmesser.

Also schindet natürlich auch das iPad optisch großen Eindruck und lässt sich leicht und intuitiv bedienen. Dank des größeren Bildschirms ist auch die onScreen-Tastatur auf Grund der größeren Felder angenehmer zu benutzen. Es ist zudem federleicht und der Akku hält verblüffend lange. Den Surftest auf der Couch besteht es deshalb mit Bravour (bis auf die Ausnahme Flashunterstützung). Es gibt auch viele nette kleine Spiele und, für mich besonders erfreulich, Monkey-Island in der aktualisierten Version zum netten Zeitvertreib. Doch hier auch gleich ein großes Manko, leider gibt es sehr wenig gratis Spiele, die über eine Demoversion hinaus gehen, hier hat Android mit seiner Open-Source-Community eindeutig die Nase vorne - die iPhone Entwickler wollen anscheinend "reich" werden mit ihren Apps (was man ja auch ein bisschen verstehen kann ...). Die Videodarstellung ist atemberaubend, aber dafür muss natürlich auch die Qualität des Ausgangsmaterials passen.

Na dann ab in die Innenstadt und der Praxistest beim Sightseeing mit unseren Freunden aus Neuseeland. Okay, für die Hosentasche ist es zu groß, also muss der Rucksack her - ist natürlich ein Nachteil gegenüber einem Smartphone aber logischerweise bedingt durch das größere Display.
Hmm, Sonnenlicht und iPad vertragen sich nicht, hier kann man auf dem Display nicht mehr viel erkennen, macht bei dieser Hitze aber nicht so viel, weil wir uns sowieso immer einen Schattenplatz suchen. Beim ersten POI (= Point of Interest) gleich mal Wikihood installiert. Da man hierfür einen iTunes-Zugang benötigt dauert es für mich beim ersten Mal sehr lange eine App herunterzuladen ...
Als es dann losgeht stellen wir fest: Ortung funktioniert tadellos und schon haben wir bald die ersten Information (auf Wunsch auf Englisch) auf dem Display. Funktioniert sehr praktisch und macht Spaß, im Ausland bleibt hier natürlich das Problem der Roaming-Gebühren. Als ich dann eine Nachricht nach Hause sende, dass wir uns (eh klar) verspäten merke ich schnell, dass ich sehr Tastatur-verwöhnt bin, das Schreiben geht mir nicht so leicht von der Hand und dauert auch dementsprechend lange - ausführliche Mails möchte ich mit dem iPad nicht schreiben müssen.

Am Abend auf der Grillfeier habe ich es selbstverständlich auch mit, sehr nett zum Häppchen nachsehen im Internet (wenn wieder mal Uneinigkeit herrscht ;) oder Youtube-Clips anzusehen.

Die große Frage die für mich allerdings bleibt, welche Daseinsberechtigung hat das iPad, nachdem der Trendy-Faktor weg ist? Welche Nische will Apple damit besetzen? Mobiler ist ein Smartphone und vom Funktionsumfang her ist natürlich ein Laptop unschlagbar. Ich habe schon gehört, dass es vor allem auch im Business-Bereich (Verkaufsunterstützung) Anwendung finden soll, hier bin ich sehr gespannt was die Zukunft bringt, das Potential ist auf jeden Fall vorhanden und der Grundstein gelegt.

Hier nochmal zusammengefasst die Quintessenz aus meinen Erfahrungen.

Vorteile:

Nachteile:

• kein Flash


• keine Webcam (Chats, Skype)


• im Freien (bei Sonneneinstrahlung) unleserlich, hier ist der Kindle um vieles praktikabler


• der Preis


• zu wenig guter gratis Content (im Vergleich zu Android)
