It's not a blog, it's a feature

A short while ago I discovered that around my favourite game Magic the Gathering a story about the backgrounds exists.
So I decided to buy my first Magic novel: The Thran.
The story of The Thran depicts the War on Dominaria and especially the abasement of Yawgmoth, The Ineffable. First it was hard for me to read an English book with many expressions I didn't know but after a while the story was enthralling me and I was sticked to the book until I finished it.
If you like fantasy novels and if you love the game it is great to read this book - to find out the backgrounds of the cards.

So I decided to read the next novel in the chronological order of the story, the first book of the Artifact Cycle - The Brothers' War. The story is about the two brothers Urza and Mizra and my anticipation is huge ... Links: Great site about the Magic books, with background info and maps: Encylopedia Phyrexianna

Glued to books the last weeks I really enjoyed to read thrilling mystery novels and as one of my favourite writers I've decided Henning Mankell. He writes really exciting stories about his swedish police inspector Kurt Wallander, a really "normal hero" - who is lonely, has many problems and sometimes drinks too much.
The most interesting aspect of this stories is that all times I could identify myself with the murderer and his reasons to kill - which makes the books really special.
So I'm sitting in front of the book, travelling to cold, rainy and foggy Sweden and have to read until I'm finished - and I finished nearly all of his books.

This two books I liked best:
- For computer freaks definitely: Firewall
- For all Mankell starters: The Fifth Woman

Just finished the 4.book of Artifact Cycle: I really enjoyed to read the stories about Urza and his fight for revenge against Phyrexia.
The books tell exciting fantasy stories and if you like to play the trading card game you will recognize many cards and the backgrounds to them. I loved to read the books and then to search for cards associated to the main figures.

The Borthers' War:
The book which I like best: The story of Urza and Mishra as young men and their conflict for supremacy of Terisiare. Also famous, their supporters Ashnod and Tawnos - my first glance on the Ornithopter.

Planeswalker:
This book was in the beginning prosy but at the middle of the book you become glued to it more and more. Urza is now a planeswalker and his minion Xantcha tries to convince him to attack Phyrexia with a special trick ... and it works!

Time Streams:
Urza tries to manipulate time to defend his home from a Phyrexian invension. Caused by treachery many things went wrong. At the end of the book Yamimaya and the ship Weatherlight play an important role.

Bloodlines:
Urza tries to breed a stronger Tolaria race while lord Yagmoth sends out an edict: Kill Urza Planeswalker!
The book has many interesting aspects but the end is really suprising and a litte bit disappointing.

Give it a try with The Borthers' War and you will have to read on and on ...

Books for Christmas presents!

I think this is a good idea for everybody - Reading educates, Reading entertains, Reading supports imagination, ...

If you want to give away books for Christmas I know two books which are suitable for people who don't read often and also for book-freaks (like me). The books of Dan Brown should provide these features: they are easy to read, really thrilling and entertain from the beginning to the end.
When your donees like thrillers and can endure books who must be read as soon as possible ;) - I want to recommend this two books:

Dan Brown - Illuminati
Dan Brown - Da Vinci Code (in german: Das Sakrileg)

So Merry Christmas will be guaranteed !!

I have just rediscovered the famous Discworld novels of Terry Pratchett: A few years ago a friend of mine gave me many of these books and I really loved the world of Rincewind and the other inhabitants. Last christmas I tried to fill my brother with enthusiasm for the Discworld and it worked.
It worked too good and as a result now I AM reading the book Mort. Once again I love the humour, the fantasy and the connection to nowadays. Believe me it is worth to give it a try!

Great A'Tuin

For all beginners, there is a great guide called The Discworld Reading Order Guide. My hint is to use Mort as entrance to the fantastic world.

Ich bin schon sehr lang ein großer Fan von Fantasykost - ich liebe es sich in ein Buch voller märchenhafter und magischer Welten zu vertiefen, so habe ich schon als Kind bis tief in die Nacht gelesen. Angefangen hat es in den jungen Jahren mit Wolfgang Hohlbein, Midgard war damals mein absoluter Favorit. Im zarten Alter von 14 Jahren habe ich mir sehr viel Geld (für mich war es das damals) angespart um mir eine wunderschöne Ausgabe von Herr der Ringe zu kaufen (mit Pergamentseiten, alle Bände in einem und dazu handgezeichnete Karten) und wurde damit zum Tolkien-Fan. Gelesen habe ich DAS Fantasy-Buch mittlerweile schon mehrere Male.

Seit diesen prägenden Zeiten bin ich ein begeistertet Fantasy-Leser geblieben!

Und nun habe ich eine Fantasy-Reihe entdeckt die alles bisherige in den Schatten stellt: The Song of Fire and Ice (auf deutsch: Das Lied von Feuer und Eis). Der Epos von Georg R. R. Martin bring mich in eine völlig neue Lesedimension und bietet einzigartige Fantasykost:
Die Charaktere sind tiefgründig und komplex, es gibt kein klischeehaftes gut oder böse. Wenn man in einem Kapitel den "Bösen" so richtig hasst (weil es aus der Sicht des aktuellen Charakter so wirkt) kann es so sein, dass man sein Handeln im nächsten Kapitel gut verstehen, ja vielleicht sogar mitfühlen kann.
Erreicht wird das durch den besonderen Erzählstil, dass es viele unterschiedliche Hauptcharaktere gibt, die sich von Kapitel zu Kapitel unterscheiden. Das jeweilige Kapitel erzählt die Geschichte aus deren Sicht, während im Hintergrund die Geschichte weiterläuft und man die Ereignisse erst später erfährt.
Die Krönung des Ganzen ist, dass die Story absolut nicht vorhersehbar ist - so können auch die Helden des Lesers durchaus sterben, wodurch die Spannung stark steigt und man sehr oft um das Leben seiner "Lieblinge" zittern muss. Das bringt einem beim Lesen fast zur Verzweiflung ("Nein, bitte nicht der ... "), aber dadurch den Hauptcharakteren noch näher!
Am Anfang ist allerdings etwas Geduld notwendig, schließlich müssen die komplexen Charaktere erst mal eingeführt werden und es gibt einfach extrem viele Häuser und Namen. Aber wenn man hier nicht die Übersicht verliert wird man mit der besten Fantasy-Serie aller Zeiten belohnt :)

Bis jetzt gibt es vier Bände und die Geschichte ist noch lange nicht abgeschlossen. George R. R. Martin schreibe gerade am fünften Band (für den letzten hat er fünf Jahre benötigt) und die ganze Fangemeinde kann das Erscheinen des Titels nicht mehr erwarten. 2011 soll sogar eine Fernsehserie dazu erscheinen, HBO hat das erste Buch mit Riesenaufwand verfilmt - es kommen also erfüllende Zeiten auf Fantasy-Fans zu.
