This week was cinema-time. At last!
We were watching the movie The Motorcycle Diaries - which is based on the diary of Ernesto "Che" Guevara.
The story is about the young (23 year old) Ernesto Guevara and his best friend Alberto Granado. The two young men are going to discover the South American mainland by motorcycle, feet and ramshackle trucks. They are looking for their greatest adventure but mostly discovering woe and repression and the inhabitants of the different countries.

The movie is a quiet, pleasing film which profits from its wonderful landscapes - the endlessness of South America is really impressing. A story full of poverty, tradition and pride, temper, soulfullness and injustice - but only for people who like quiet, sad stories with a grateful slowness.

I'm unterstanding how these experiences influenced the evolution of the revolutionist Che Guevara - his wish to help the Latin-Americans, but violence is never the solution to problems ...

My rating: 8/10 Motorcyle Spare-Parts

I remember me as a teenager, sitting in front of the TV, Thursday night, and watching the X-Files. Then the way downstairs to bed, in the darkness, scaried but very fascinated by the stories.
Nowadays, with buying the X Files Season 1 Collectors Box, I have some kind of revival: with the same fascination I watch the series of the first season.

My most favourite Episodes are:

• Ice: Mulder and Scully in an isolated arctic research center with an alien parasite
  
• Eve: Two young girls with their father dying behave the same way - like they are one
  
• Fire: A pyrokinetic mass murder with a weakness for women with red hair ist the aim of Mulder and Scullys chase
  
• The Erlenmeyer Flask: The great final of the first season with the dead of Deap Throat and a mysterious experiment with alien DNA.
  

Now lets start with Season 2 - I WANT TO BELIEVE

Ich habe mich entschlossen heute einen Eintrag auf deutsch zu verfassen, da es um einen deutschen Film geht und mir meine Botschaft zu wichtig ist, um das Risiko einzugehen durch mein schlechtes Englisch Missverstaendnisse auszuloesen.

Wir (Judith, Elisabeth + ich) haben uns Freitag abend den Film "Der Untergang" angesehen, mit grossem Interesse, denn schliesslich loeste der Film doch einige Diskussionen aus und war zudem fuer den Auslandsoscar nominiert.

Der Film handelt von den letzten Tagen in Hitlers Bunker und probiert es den Menschen Hitler darzustellen. Eigentlich ist der Film sehr gut gemacht, er zeigt gut den Fanatismus und das sinnlose Morden auch noch kurz vor Kriegsende als schon alles verloren ist und schafft es dadurch aufzuruetteln.
Allerdings macht der Film einen entscheidenden, schwerwiegenden und meiner Ansicht nach gefaehrlichen Fehler: er stellt Hitler teilweise so dar, dass man schon fast geneigt ist Mitleid mit ihm zu empfinden, wenn man sich nicht rechtzeitg vor Augen fuehrt: Halt, das ist Hitler, der hat wirklich kein Mitleid verdient!!!

Ich finde es einfach falsch einen "Daemon" als so menschlich darzustellen, der schliesslich fuer den groessten Massenmord der Geschichte (so wurden alleine 7 Mill. Juden umgebracht) verantwortlich ist und am Ende auch "sein" deutsches Volk in den Untergang fuehren wollte. So einen Menschen kann und will man menschlich nicht mehr verstehen, denn schliesslich macht Liebe, Naechstenliebe und soziales Gefuehl Menschlichkeit aus und da kann ich bei dem groessten Verbrecher der Menschheit nichts entdecken.

Darum empfinde ich diesen Film auch als gefaehrlich und falsch, allerdings bin ich der Meinung jeder sollte sich selbst ein Bild davon machen und dann urteilen - bin gerne fuer andere Meinungen und jede Diskussion darueber bereit.

This summer is cinema blockbuster time and for my surprise I watched two really good ones.

- Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith: the third part fulfils the wishes of all fans (like me). Exciting story, bombastic fights and a huge portion of Star Wars feeling with Darth Vader. A portly crossing to the old trilogy - you will be 2 hours well entertained.

- Batman begins: Batman is back (at the beginning!). Gloomy! Filled with bitterness! Fear the bat!
The great director Christopher Nolan (Memento, Insomnia) created a new Batman feeling, more violent and with thoughtfullness. Gotham City looks great - the best comic movie since The Crow and Blade I.

P.S.: In my CD-Player: System of a Down - Mesmerize

On friday I watched my newest DVD: Memento. My expectations were huge: all the critics were praising this thriller.
The promises were not too much: Christopher Nolan made a exciting, smart movie - the idea of reversing the chronology leads to tension every scene.

Just thinking about what goes wrong in this world, if the human race becomes fu**ing crazy (or is allready) - caused by the movie "We feed the world".

The pictures of this movie are shocking - but more shocking are the facts told: - We are able to produce food for about 14 billions of people, but about 840 million (840.000.000 lives) are starving or dying caused by the effect of hunger. - In Brazil soybeans are bred for the cattle in Europe and the inhabitants are suffering hunger, when in Austria wheat and corn is used for heating. This list is quite long, but I don't want to tell all interesting facts of the movie.

X-Files Season 2 provides a long-time story line where the mythology episodes show a global conspiracy with new main acters: agent Alex Krycek, X and the alien bounty hounter.
The episodes which I enjoyed most are:

- Sleepless: a man who is able to kill with his dreams, caused by an experiment by the army for the perfect soldier
- Aubrey: about a murderer, which grandchild over 50 years later commits the same crimes caused by here hereditary factor
- Satan: a small town with occult rituals and a secret to hide
- Colony / End Game: great double episode about mulders sister and an alien clone colony on the earth

Season 2 ends with a famous cliffhanger and the thrilling episode "Anasazi" - I bet you can't wait to watch the third season ... ;)

Think about the following case:
You went to the video store and borrowed a DVD for a nice home cinema on your home PC. When you inserted the DVD in your DVD-rom an EULA showed up to be able to watch the movie. You accepted and enjoyed the movie for example with your girlfriend.
In the night you took back the DVD to the store and went happy to bed after a cosy evening watching a movie.
Three days later you wanted to safe your actual work (for example from you diploma thesis) to a CD-RW. When you started the burning program to safe your files, the program prompted with an error message that no CD burning rom is found. Astonishment, the writer was still there in the computer, but WTF ... :(

A few hours and an intensive google search later everything was ok again and you won't believe what was the reason for the troubles. The DVD installed a small program on your PC which put your PC off using the CD writer any longer.
I found an very interesting HEISE article about it and thanks to them the producer of the DVD was forced to provide a tool to deinstall their program to make your writer functioning again.

I don't know why they develop such a copy protection - I think the money could spent the other way to make people buy DVDs. With the development costs DVDs could become cheaper and special appeals (like great packages or something similar - I think marketing workers have better ideas than me) could be provided to make people buy DVDs.
Be sure - if I had bought that DVD I would sent it back and never ever buy a DVD from a publisher who uses this copy protection again!

SHAME ON YOU!!

Great "Monster of the Week" episodes and the main story continues with really high excitement - the third season satisfies alle fans!

The best episodes of this season for me are:

- D.P.O.: A teen in Oklahoma is able to control lightning with his mind
- Oubliette: A kidnapped victim 15 years ago feels like the newest victim of the kidnapper, this episode is really affecting
- Nisei / 731: Autopsy of an alien by japan scientists which leads to a train of the government with a secret package. Mulder takes this train and has to face X and a mysterious man
- Piper Maru / Apocrypha: A strange black fluid takes control over seaman and later on also Alex Krycek, it seems like some kind of alien life form which takes its host over with this fluid

In the deep winter - how can it be? Very easy, go to your local cinema and watch the movie Litte Miss Sunshine. The independent movie is great, with a very positive message letting you smile most of the time and causing fits of laugther. At the same time it is a subtle critique on the american society and the beauty mania.

Go and see it to have a really nice evening and all the time you have to push your car to start, you will think of the movie - I promise you!

I have an affectation for dystopian novels: It is fascinating how many details you can find from such classical books like 1984 or Brave New World in the world today. And it is shocking too ...
The movie Children of Men works on the same aspect - how the future of our beautiful planet could be. And the story is really oppressive - if you watch the news many things work nowadays similar as in the story of the film (like the treating of refugees).
So lets work together to prevent this dystopia to happen and if it's with small details. But first go and see the movie :)

By the way: This is my one hundreds entry in this weblog and should be celebrated - so what is about a comment? ;)

Es gibt gute Filme, die unterhalten und man kann sie dann getrost wieder vergessen. Und es gibt gute Filme, die bleiben irgendwie im Hinterkopf hängen - sie regen dann zu intensivem Diskutieren oder Nachdenken an.

Die Fälscher mit Karl Markovics in der Hauptrolle und Stefan Ruzowitzky auf dem Regiestuhl ist ein Film der zweiten Kategorie und deswegen zu Recht mit einem Auslandsoscar belohnt worden:
Die Geschichte handelt von einem kriminellen Juden, der nach seiner Verhaftung im KZ landet. Nach einiger Zeit wird er in ein anderes KZ verlagert, wo er den Auftrag erhält den Dollar + britische Pfund zu fälschen. Den Insassen in dieser Arbeitsgruppe geht es den Umständen entsprechend gut, doch nach einiger Zeit wird ihnen ihre wichtige Bedeutung für den weiteren Kriegsverlauf bewusst und sie geraten in den Gewissenskonflikt zwischen Überleben und Nazideutschland so lange wie möglich aufzuhalten.

Das Besondere ist, dass man sich in die Lage der Gefangenen wirklich gut hinein versetzen kann und es stellt sich natürlich die Frage: "Was würde ich machen?" Der Überlebenstrieb ist stark und treibt den Menschen an, allerdings hat man irgendwie auch die moralische Verantwortung gegenüber Anderen - den Geld bedeutet neue Waffen, bedeutet Tod und Elend und könnte eventuell sogar kriegsentscheidend sein ...
Ich kann dazu nur sagen, dass ich froh bin vor diese Entscheidung nie gestellt worden zu sein!

Das es sich noch dazu um eine wahre Geschichte mit autobiographischem Hintergrund handelt macht das Ganze noch dramatischer.

Also auf jeden Fall ein "must-see", falls der Film im Kino nicht mehr läuft gibt es auch schon die DVD dazu, und die ist aktuell wirklich sehr preisgünstig.

Wertung: 9/10 Dollar-Scheine

Wir haben uns gestern den Film Let's make MONEY angesehen. Während des Filmes war es fast nicht auszuhalten die Fakten so unverblümt mitgeteilt zu bekommen!

Am meisten getroffen hat mich das Konzept der gezielten Verschuldung der finanziell armen, aber rohstoffreichen (sollte eigentlich ein Widerspruch sein) Staaten. Aber irgendwie muss es einem ja klar sein, dass unser Wohlstand und die Vermehrung des Geldes irgendwoher kommen müssen, nur will man es irgendwie nicht wahr haben.

Nahezu unglaublich sind die Bilder des Immobilien-Wahns in Spanien: Dabei handelt es sich um riesige Flächen leerstehender Wohnungen, die nur zur Geldanlage verwendet werden - zB: in vielen Pensionsfonds auch in Österreich.
Auch die Eroberung der sogenannten Emerging Markets (für mich Unwort des Jahres) durch weltfremde Fondmanager im Kontrast zu der Riesenarmut der Menschen dort hat mich sehr erschüttert.

Man bleibt irgendwie fassungs- und ratlos zurück ...
Um trotzdem aktiv zu werden; wie im Film schon erwähnt - was kann man als kleines Rädchen am Wagen machen: Zusammenschließen und kritische Einrichtung unterstützen!
Also am besten gleich meinem Beispiel folgen und bei Attac Mitglied werden.

Der Start mit Lost war nicht ganz einfach: Am Anfang benötigte die Geschichte eine gewisse Zeit um so richtig loszulegen, weil die Charaktere in Ruhe vorgestellt wurden. Damals habe ich das für ein Manko gehalten und ein bisschen Überwindung benötigt trotzdem dabei zu bleiben. Doch auf Dauer stellte sich genau diese Tiefe als eine Riesenstärke von Lost heraus, damit war ich den Überlebenden auf der Insel so richtig verbunden, konnte mit ihnen Mitfühlen und Leiden, als dann die Handlung deutlich Fahrt aufnahm.

Die Ereignisse auf der Insel schafften es immer wieder mich zu faszinieren und noch lange nach Ende jeder Folge über das Gesehene nachzudenken und mir Erklärungen dafür zu überlegen. Die "Leistung" von Lost war es allerdings mich immer wieder völlig gebannt vor dem Fernseher zu fesseln, um nach gut 40min verblüfft festzustellen, dass schon wieder eine Folge vor bei war. Dieses Erlebnis hielt alle sechs Staffeln an um gegen Ende natürlich nochmals ungeahnte Höhen zu erreichen.

Als dann bei unserem mehrstündigen Event zum gemeinsamen Erleben des Serienfinales klar war, dass Lost jetzt zu Ende ist war das Gefühl eine Mischung aus Wehmut ("Nie mehr Lost schauen!!") und Freude (so viele spannende Stunden erlebt zu haben).
Hier gleich eine klare Festlegung: Ich bin froh wenn Serien ein Gesamtkonzept haben, dass auf hohem Niveau zu Ende geführt werden anstatt ohne Höhepunkt wegen schwacher Quoten und weil der richtige Absprungpunkt übersehen wurde einfach auszulaufen (Akte-X hätte dieses Schicksal fast gedroht).

Jedem Lostianer läuft auch nach dem Ende der Serie vermutlich bei der einprägsamen Signation (es ist eigentlich mehr ein Geräusch) und dem charakteristischem Schriftzug noch immer ein wohliger Schauer über den Rücken.

So bleibt mir jetzt nur mehr die Erinnerung und der feste Vorsatz in einigen Jahren noch einmal auf die Insel zurück zu kehren.
